Successful Hackathons
Problem: Lack of understanding on what mechanisms drive tangible and intangible success outcomes during a hackathon.
Outcomes & Solutions: We instrumented a repeated-measures outcomes assessment for the Pluralsight Hackathon. Hackathons emerged as a lightweight social intervention to increase employees’ belonging at work. Because being on a team with a strong culture of belonging and learning boosted hackathon success, we recommended that organizers focus on creating team practices of learning and belonging.
Purpose & Method: Case study examining hackathon anxiety, team belonging, team learning culture, and perceived success on both tangible and intangible outcomes.
Outcome: Simply participating in a hackathon can decrease participants’ skill-related anxiety and significantly increase their sense of belonging in their workplace communities.
Outcome: Teams can also change the likelihood of success. A hackathon team with a strong sense of belonging and learning culture can mitigate the negative impacts of that anxiety, and enable both high and low-anxiety individuals to achieve success.
